Dr Frank H. Anderson

Dr. Frank H. Anderson is a graduate of the University of British Columbia school of Medicine. He did a rotating internship at the Vancouver General Hospital and residency training in both Medicine and Pathology. He received a coveted R. Samuel McLaughlin Traveling Fellowship for study with Dame Professor Sheila Sherlock, a leader in liver disease, at the University of London, England, and a second Fellowship for study with Dr. Joseph Kirsner, a leader in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, at the University of Chicago. Dr. Anderson is now associate Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Anderson has been involved with teaching and research since his appointment to the University faculty in 1970. He has been the director of the Fourth Year Medical School Program, the Director of the M.S.I. program, the Director of the Fellowship Training Program for the Division of Gastroenterology. Dr. Anderson was the Head of the Division of Gastroenterology, the Vancouver General Hospital for 15 years. He was chairman of the Nutrition Committee, and was instrumental in establishing the Chemical Dependency Resource Team at the Vancouver General Hospital, as well as the Provincial Home Enteral and Parenteral Feeding Program.
Dr. Anderson is involved in many clinical research studies, mainly in the areas of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and in Liver Disease. He has five research nurses working on clinical studies as well as an ethics coordinator. Dr. Anderson established the Northwestern Society of Intestinal Research (now the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research), a very successful organization that supports all aspects of intestinal disease in Canada. Dr. Anderson was President of the Alcohol and Drug Education Society for 10 years during its formulative years.
Dr. Anderson has many publications and papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has spoken nationally and internationally at numerous conferences, as well as postgraduate and continuing medical education courses. Dr. Anderson has traveled to most of the hospitals in British Columbia giving postgraduate educational courses and medical grand rounds. Dr. Anderson produces and distributes a physician newsletter entitled “The Hepatitis Knowledge Network” to about 1,000 physicians in British Columbia. Dr. Anderson is also working with the Canadian Association of Chinese Professionals to increase the awareness, screening and treatment of hepatitis B in the Asian community.
Dr. Anderson has developed a comprehensive database for liver disease that has helped the BC Centre of Disease Control and the Provincial Health Authority identify the demographics and distribution of Hepatitis C throughout the province. This knowledge has also helped in establishing a standard of treatment for Hepatitis C.
Dr. Anderson believes in the team approach in the care of patients with chronic liver and bowel disease.
